The Nationwide Series Insider Review Michigan - Carfax 250 - Weekend Update - Race 25
Nationwide Series Carfax 250 in the Irish Hills of Michigan. Carl Edwards wins for the first time at Michigan; gives Jack Roush his 19th win and Ford their 1st Michigan win in the Series since 2001. In the shadow of Detroit, Michigan is always an important stop with the manufacturers wanting to make a statement in their back yard. Edwards collected $55,895 for the win out of an estimated $1.2 million purse. Driving the #60 Planters Ford for Roush Racing, Edwards led 5 times for 71 laps out of the 125 total laps. Brian Vickers finished second in the #32 ABF Freight Toyota. Vickers had a strong car on long runs, but still could not catch Edwards who took the checkered flag under yellow as Danny Efland in the #01spun out on the white flag lap. The rest of the top five were: Tony Stewart (#20) 3rd, Mark Martin (#5) 4th and Greg Biffle (#16) 5th.
The controversy on Saturday came long after ESPN2 stopped their coverage after the race. As you may know, NASCAR selects the top 5 cars in the race and a few other random cars and "Dyno Tests" them. You may recall that the "Dyno Tests" are the root of the recent "restrictor plate" changes NASCAR made to even the playing field among the manufacturers.
Are you sitting down? Joe Gibbs Racing (the squeaky cleanest team in racing) got caught cheating the Dyno Test. Both the #18 and the #20 cars were found with magnets stuck behind the gas pedals. The theory is the "shims" or magnets prevented the accelerator from operating at 100% wide open. If not detected, the JGR cars would have appeared to produce lower than actual rear wheel horsepower numbers on the Dyno.
What does all this mean? You can expect JGR to pick up the largest fines and penalties in Nationwide Series history when NASCAR releases its findings on Tuesday. Why? This might be the first time a team has attempted to cheat or alter the testing NASCAR does on the cars. Sure, all teams look for ways to smudge the gray area in the rule book, but this might be the first time a team is caught trying to cover up or alter testing results or data. J.D. Gibbs took full responsibility for the actions of the teams as the news shocked the garage area late Saturday night.
47 teams were on the preliminary entry list and 46 cars attempted to qualify. Larry Gunselman (#0), Kertus Davis (#49) and Mike Guerity (#57) failed to qualify.
Series leader Clint Bowyer finished 10th. Carl Edward's 1st place finish closes the gap to just 113 points. Brad Keselowski finished 11th and stands 132 points out of 1st in the 3rd spot in driver points.
Next week the Nationwide Series invades the "Soup Bowl" in Bristol on Friday night, August 22nd.
Trackside 1 Nationwide Series Teams:
#84 Mike Harmon Racing Chevy driven by Mike Harmon -- did not make the trip to Michigan because of a lack of sponsorship. Look for the fully sponsored car at Bristol. Cajun Industries joins us as primary sponsor for the weekend with special thanks James Booth, Lee Ori and Greg Taras for joining us as associate sponsors for the weekend.
#92 Keselowski Automotive Dodge driven by Brian Keselowski -- Brian Keselowski, Brad's older Brother, qualified 34th at Michigan. His hometown of Rochester Hills, MI is less than 2 hours from the track. Practically the home town boy, Brian drove a solid race and finished 24th just one lap off the pace. The team brought home $17,025 for the effort. Check out this great story about the Keselowski Brothers by Ragan Swan from NASCAR.com. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for Bristol.
ARCA Series The ARCA Series went back to its roots this weekend taking to the dirt at the State Fairgrounds in Springfield, IL in the 46th Allen Crowe 100. Qualifying saw Frank Kimmel take the pole followed by Ron Cox.
Frank Kimmel took the top spot in his own (#44) Ford Drive One Ford by leading 83 of 102 laps. His 7th victory at Springfield ties the legendary, late Dean Roper for the most wins at Springfield. It also snaps a year long winless streak for Kimmel. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. (#99) passed Brian Tyler (#25) on the final lap to finish second, five lengths behind Kimmel. The rest of the top five were: 3rd Brian Tyler , 4th Matt Carter (#46), 5th Tayler Malsam (#4). Mike Harmon (#24) started 23rd and finished 3 laps off the pace in the 24th position.
Sprint Cup 3M Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway Carl Edwards (#99) won the afternoon event and takes home $226,075, and his 5th win of the season in Sprint Cup. And, with a better back flip on Sunday than on Saturday, Edwards swept the weekend! Edwards held off Kyle Busch (#18) on the restart with just 2 laps to go. The turning point, however, was the pit stop on lap 181 when Edwards got out of the pits first with a two tire stop. The rest of the top 5 were: 3rd David Ragan (#6), 4th Greg Biffle (#16), 5th Matt Kenseth (#17). Roush had all 5 teams in the top 10.
Craftsman Truck Series The truck series had the weekend off. Look for the trucks to race again on Wednesday night August 20th at Bristol Motor Speedway.
If you are going to be at Bristol, call us for Sponsorship Opportunities that include garage and pit access.
