The Nationwide Series Insider Review Bristol - Food City 250 - Weekend Update - Race 26
Nationwide Series Food City 250 in Thunder Valley at Bristol. Brad Keselowski (#88) wins for the first time at Bristol and earns his second Series win moving to within 122 points of Clint Bowyer in the Nationwide Series standings. Keselowski started 37th on one of the toughest tracks in the Series to gain positions. He picked up 11 spots by the first caution on lap 18. By lap 101 he was up to 7th. By lap 172 he was in 3rd position. Keselowski took the lead for good with 24 laps remaining when Clint Bowyer made his only mistake of the race. Bowyer dropped onto the apron and made a slight wiggle up the track. It was all Keselowski needed to take the spot. Keselowski collected $57,438 for the win out of an estimated $1.4 million purse. Driving the #2 BB&T RCR Chevy, Clint Boyer let 121 laps out of the 250 total laps finishing 2nd. The rest of the top five were: Greg Biffle (#16) 3rd, rookie and pole sitter Cale Gale (#33) finished 4th and David Stremme (#64) finished 5th.
More than 100,000 fans watched the night race at Bristol. Watching from the infield was an incredible experience. Brad Keselowski won over the entire crowd with his raw and honest post race excitement. Even his burn-out driving up the victory lane ramp was both unprecedented and unrehearsed.
52 teams were on the preliminary entry list and all 52 teams attempted to qualify. #49-Kertus Davis, #09-John Wes Townley, #89-Morgan Shepherd, #34-Kenny Hendrick, #78-Nick Tucker, #90-Johnny Champan #92-Brian Keselowski, #76-Ryan Hackett, #84-Mike Harmon did not qualify.
Off the track, NASCAR levied penalties against Joe Gibbs Racing for the dyno test manipulations carried out after the Michigan race. Joey Lagano (#18) and Tony Stewart (#20) were both fined 150 driver points and placed on probation until December 8th. Both crew chief Jason Ratcliff (#18) and crew chief Dave Rodgers (#20) were suspended indefinitely and fined $50,000. Joe Gibbs, listed as owner of both cars, was fined 150 owners points for each car. Additional penalties from the No. 18 team, car chief Dorian Thorsen; engine tuner Michael Johnson; and crew member Toby Bigelow and from the #20 team, car chief Richard Bray and engine tuner Dan Bajek have been indefinitely suspended from NASCAR.
NASCAR announced the 2009 schedule for the all three series. The Nationwide Series gives up the Mexico City race and Rusty Wallace's Iowa Speedway picks up the date. There are 35 total races on the schedule with 8 stand alone dates and 27 Sprint Cup companion dates.
Next week the Nationwide Series heads west for the Camping World 200 at Auto Club Speedway in California on August 30th.
Trackside 1 Nationwide Series Teams:
#84 Mike Harmon Racing Chevy driven by Mike Harmon -- Mike Harmon arrived at Bristol with full sponsorship and high hopes for the weekend thanks to Cajun Industries our primary sponsor for the weekend (thanks Ken, David, Chris and Ian). Special thanks also go to James Booth and guests (Brandon, Deb and Grant), Greg Taras and guests (Kevin, Tracy and Lisa) and Lee Ori and guests (Tim, Kevin and Dan) for joining us as associate sponsors for the weekend. The first practice went well, making changes to make the car tp make it turn better off the center of the corner. However, our day came to a crashing halt as the left axel and rear end spider gear broke sending Mike into the turn 1 wall in the 2nd practice session. The team worked hard over the next 5 hours trying to get the car ready for qualifying, clearing NASCAR final inspection with just minutes to spare. Mike was the 43rd car to attempt to qualify, but he just couldn't get a handle on the car during the 2 lap qualifying attempt. To add insult to injury NASCAR held the teams that failed to qualify in the infield until after the Nationwide race was over.
Ask us about the California Special. Sponsor the #84 for only $8,000.
#92 Keselowski Automotive Dodge driven by Brian Keselowski -- Brian Keselowski, Brad's older Brother spent both practice sessions fighting a tight race car. They tried several changes from springs to track bar adjustments trying to get the car through the center of the turn faster. Brian just could not find enough speed to make the race. Look for the #92 car to make its next attempt at Richmond.
Sponsorship opportunities are available for Richmond.
Sprint Cup Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway Carl Edwards (#99) sat on the Bristol Pole and won the action packed night race taking home $344,625, and his 6th win of the season in Sprint Cup. Edwards fueled the fire and further accentuated the rivalry between Edwards and Kyle Busch (#18) by moving Busch out of the way on lap 470. Edwards then pulled away from Busch over the next 30 laps to take the victory. Busch was able to hold on for 2nd place. After the race Busch was clearly not happy as he chased Edwards on the cool down lap and struck the #99 car hard on the right side. Edwards shook off the contact and then spun Busch around putting an exclamation point on the victory. For his efforts, Busch earned a visit to the NASCAR hauler along with team owner Joe Gibbs. Finally a week where the on-track activites are more exciting than the off-track silly season! The rest of the top 5 were: 3rd Denny Hamlin (#11), 4th Kevin Harvick (#29), 5th Jeff Gordon (#24). For the second week in a row Roush Racing quietly had all 5 teams in the top 12.
Craftsman Truck Series The truck series raced Wednesday August 20th at Bristol Motor Speedway in the O'Reilly 200. Why Wednesday? There just is not enough room at the Bristol Motor Speedway to host all three series three days in a row.
Kyle Busch (#51) won the O'Reilly 200 truck series event at Bristol. In a race that only saw three leaders: Busch (145 laps), Benson (29) and Jimmie Johnson (29). Yes, that's 203 laps. The truck series saw its 5th green white checker overtime finish of the season. Busch won $50,075. The rest of the top 5 were: 2nd Todd Bodine (#30), 3rd Scott Speed (#22), 4th Johnny Benson (#23) and 5th Rich Crawford (#14).
ARCA Series The ARCA Series was off this weekend. Look for them next week in DuQuoin, IL on the dirt.
Trackside 1: Behind The Scenes with Mike Harmon Over the next few newsletters, we are going to be taking a behind the scenes look at the Nationwide Series by talking to Team Owner / Driver Mike Harmon, Driver Brian Keselowski and Team Owner Dusty Whitney.
This weekend at Bristol we sat down with Mike Harmon, driver and owner of Mike Harmon Racing. He fields the #84 NASCAR Nationwide Series car and the #24 ARCA / ReMax car.
TS1: Mike, from Trackside 1, we want to thank you for allowing us to both work with you and for you this season. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule here at Bristolto talk with us and give race fans a glimpse into the life of a race car owner.
Mike: No problem Chris. We need all the help we can get. I really appreciate the assistance Trackside 1 provides. Many times this season we would not have made it to the track without ya'll. These new Mini Sponsorship Paks we are offering this year really lay the foundation for getting us to the tracks each week.
TS1: Mike, how long have you been racing as a way to earn a living?
Mike: (laughing) I didn't know I was earning a living yet. More like surviving. But seriously, I would say in 1990 I decided to make racing a full time gig. However between two racing series, often in different parts of the country each weekend, and the cost to be competitive; I am almost to the point if I can't get more consistent sponsor support I may be forced out. In the ARCA series we are a competitive team, I expect to finish in the top 15 or 20 every weekend. But it is almost impossible to make more money that you spend in the ARCA Series.
On the Nationwide side, it takes at least $10,000 just to show up at the track each week and that's before you take the first lap. I am a racer and a competitor first and we always feel like we have a fair chance at the ARCA level. In Nationwide, it's frustrating when we have to make the business decision to "start and park." As a racer it just crushes you. But on our budget, we have to build up enough money and choose the races where we want to run hard. Look at Talladega this year, we brought a strong car with a solid engine, we stayed out of trouble and we brought home a 17th place finish. Races like that keep you going on the Nationwide side!
Call us for sponsorship opportunities at both California and Richmond.
