The Nationwide Series Insider Review California - Camping World 300 - Weekend Update - Race 27
Nationwide Series Camping World 300 on the West Coast at The Auto Club Speedway in California. Kyle Busch (#18) steam rolls to his 7th win this season and earns the 15th win in the Series this year for Joe Gibbs Racing. Just two races after losing 7 team members to suspension (including both crew chiefs and car chiefs) Busch started on the pole and led 144 laps of the 150 total laps. It was the first time anyone has won at California from the pole position. In fact, the only times Busch wasn't leading were when he came to the pits twice under green. After everyone cycled through pit stops both times, Busch was again the leader. Busch collected $99,195 for the win out of an estimated $1.6 million purse. Driving the #60 Save-a-lot Roush Ford, Carl Edwards finished 2nd. Having a little fun, Edwards bumped Busch on the cool down lap. The rest of the top five were: Brian Vickers (#32) 3rd, Jeff Burton (#29) finished 4th and Jamie McMurray (#17) finished 5th. An estimated 35,000 fans watched the race at California.
44 teams were on the preliminary entry list and all 44 teams attempted to qualify. #84-Mike Harmon did not qualify.
Next week the Nationwide Series heads back to the east coast for the Emerson Radio 250 at Richmond International Raceway in Virginia on September 5th.
Trackside 1 Nationwide Series Teams:
#84 Mike Harmon Racing Chevy driven by Mike Harmon -- Mike Harmon made the long trip across the country in an attempt to qualify for the Camping World 300 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA. With only 44 cars entered for the race, odds were good that Harmon would make the field and bring home at least $20,834 (the purse for the 43rd car). However, for the 2nd week in a row the racing gremlins worked their magic. Mid-way through the second practice session, Harmon heard a pop in the engine and it seemed a cylinder "let go." Up to that point, Harmon was 41st fastest in the second practice and looking like a shoe-in to make the race. With just 7 cylinders it would be almost impossible to make the race, but after spirited discussion and negotiations with NASCAR, they agreed to let Harmon make a qualifying attempt. Harmon was the 44th car to take the track and as rolled through he gears, the engine gave out completely just before taking the green flag for qualifying. NASCAR put Harmon on the 5 minute clock to make repairs, but he could not get the engine to come back to life.
If you watched the qualifying on the Speed Channel, we got good TV time as the announcers discussed Harmon's engine troubles, NASCAR's qualifying procedures and the 5 minute clock to repair the car before qualifying.
The team made the long trek back to North Carolina and immediately began to rebuild the engine to get ready for Richmond this weekend.
Cajun Industries was on the hood of the car for the second week in a row as our primary sponsor for the weekend. Special thanks also go to Leslie Taylor, our newest team sponsor from the West Coast and her guests for the weekend (Ron, Dean, Gary, Jennifer, Jill, Carlos and Pamela). Welcome to the Mike Harmon Racing Family and thanks for your tremendous support!
We would also like to recognize Bridgette and Bruce Colbert and ask you to consider offering your support to the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial through their recycling campaign. For more information, check out www.recycle4avdlm.com. We will be running their recycling campaign logo on the car in select races this season.
Ask us about the Richmond Special. Sponsor the #84 for only $8,000.
#92 Keselowski Automotive Dodge driven by Brian Keselowski -- Brian Keselowski is still looking for primary sponsorship and because of the cost to make the trip across the country, did not attempt the race in California. Look for the #92 car to make its next attempt at Memphis in October unless a primary sponsor can be secured before then.
Sprint Cup Pepsi 500 at Auto Club Speedway, Fontana, California Jimmie Johnson (#48) sat on the Pole at Auto Club Speedway and dominated the race while leading 227 of the 250 laps around this 2 mile track en route to his 3rd win of the season. This was the first time a Sprint Cup team has taken the pole and won the race at Auto Club Speedway. The win earned Johnson $314,611, and the 36th Sprint Cup win of his career. Greg Biffle (#16) had a strong car and great pit stops, but it wasn't enough to hold off Johnson who reclaimed the lead for good on lap 223. The rest of the top 5 were: 3rd Denny Hamlin (#11), 4th Kevin Harvick (#29), 5th Matt Kenseth (#17). For the third week in a row Roush Racing had 3 teams in the top 10.
While the battle for the lead was dominated by Johnson all night, jockeying for the top 12 chase spots was fierce and exciting all night. With only Richmond left to set the 12 car field for the Chase, the top 12 looks like this:
Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Jeff Burton are all locked in to the Chase. All Greg Biffle has to do is start the Richmond race and he is also locked in to the Chase. Spots 7 through 12 are all up for grabs. Richmond will be another exciting Saturday Night race.
Craftsman Truck Series The truck series was off this weekend. Look for them again at Gateway Raceway outside St. Louis on Saturday Night.
ARCA Series The ARCA Series was back on the dirt this weekend in DuQuoin, IL. Frank Kimmel (#44) was back in the winners circle for the 73rd time in the ARCA Series. Kimmel lead 96 of 102 laps and was only threatened briefly late in the race by Patrick Sheltra (#60) who finished 2nd. The rest of the top five were: Ken Schrader (#52) 3rd, Dexter Bean (#37) 4th and Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. (#99) 5th. Mike Harmon (#24) had a solid run going, but lost the engine on lap 82.
