The Nationwide Series Insider Review Richmond - Emerson Radio 250 - Weekend Update - Race 28
|
Nationwide Series
Nationwide Series Emerson Radio 250 at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond,
VA.
Rain from Hurricane / Tropical Storm Hanna cancelled the Nationwide Series qualifying
scheduled for Friday afternoon and pushed the start of the race back from Friday night until
Sunday night. Just a few hours after the Sprint Cup race ended, the NASCAR Nationwide
Series Emerson Radio 250 started at 7:30 Sunday night.
With the starting grid set by the NASCAR Nationwide Series Rule Book, Joey Lagano was in
the pole position. The first 30 positions were set by Owner's Points, spot #31 went to the
#21 driven by Austin Dillon (grandson of Richard Childress) because the car won a race in
2007. Spots 32 through 43 were set based on the number of qualifying attemps made in the
2008 campaign.
44 cars entered the race, with the #0 of Johnny Davis Racing driven by Larry Gunselman
withdrawing. Unoffically and reading between the lines, the #0 probably withdrew to ensure
the #00 of Michael Waltrip Racing driven by Josh Wise made the race. If our guess is
correct, you can bet the #0 car was paid at least $20,000 to make way for the #00.
Carl Edwards (#60 Scott's Ford) made the best adjustments on the last pit stop and pulled
away in the last 28 laps to win the Emerson Radio 250 at Richmond. Edward's 4th
Nationwide win of the season earned him $45,770 out of an estimated $1.1 million purse.
The win was Edward's 17th career Nationwide Series win and his 3rd in the last 4 races.
Clint Bowyer (#2 BB&T Chevy) dominated most of the race leading 195 of the total 250 laps,
but a slight bauble with 28 to go was all Edwards needed to slip under Bowyer and take the
lead. Maybe Bowyer's team decided not to adjust on the car on the last two pit stops. The
car was so fast and so dominate, it seemed they should have rolled to the win. David
Stremme (#64 Penske Trucks Dodge) also had the lead late in the race, but an early race
spin cost him a set of tires and he had to go the final 88 laps on tires that already had 30
laps on them.
After Edwards, the top 5 were: Scott Wimmer (#29) 2nd, Clint Bowyer 3rd, Denny Hamlin
(#18) 4th and David Ragan (#6) 5th.
The Nationwide Series is off next weekend, but look for the roadloans.com at Dover
Speedway on September 20th.
Trackside 1 Teams
#84 Mike Harmon Racing Chevy driven by Mike Harmon -- Harmon is still looking for
primary sponsorship and based on the cost of attempting Bristol and California and missing
both of those races, we did not make the trip to Richmond. As luck would have it, the #84
would have made the race in Richmond because qualifying was cancelled. Harmon has
attempted to qualify 20 times this season which would have put him 41st on the starting grid.
Look for the #84 car to make its next attempt at Dover on September 20th. Partial
sponsorship has been secured, but the rear quarterpanels ($10,000) and the hood ($5,000)
are still available.
#92 Keselowski Automotive Dodge driven by Brian Keselowski -- Brian Keselowski is still
looking for primary sponsorship and because of the cost to make the trip across the country,
did not attempt the race in California. Look for the #92 car to make its next attempt at
Memphis in October unless a primary sponsor can be secured before then.
Sprint Cup Series
NASCAR Sprint Cup Chevy Rock and Roll 400 from Richmond, VA. Well, Hanna took away
the excitement of the night race, but the final race before the chase carried plenty of drama.
This 3/4 mile short track was slippery, fast and took a bite out of several cars, including
chase hopefuls David Ragan (#6) and Kasey Kahne (#9). The tracke also gave Matt
Kenseth (#17) quite a scare with a 39th place finish.
Jimmie Johnson (#48) had the best car at the end. After a 10 lap battle where it looked like
Tony Stewart (#20) might take the lead, Johnson held him off on the high side of the race
track, made Stewart use up his tires and Johnson cruised to the win.
It was Johnson's 37th career Cup win, 2nd win in a row and its starting to look and feel a lot
like last year's run up to the chase. The win earned Johnson $256,836 out of a $5.5 million
purse. If Johnson is hitting his stride, it could be over for the rest of the Chase contenders.
The rest of the top 5 were: Tony Stewart, very unhappy with 2nd, Denny Hamlin (#11) 3rd,
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (#88) 4th and Mark Martin (#8) 5th.
David Ragan got into trouble in two on track fender benders and finished 32nd. Kasey
Kahne also had his share of troubles on the day both on the track and in the pits and
finished 19th. Their troubles along with Clint Bowyers 12th place finish gave Bowyer the final
spot in the Chase.
After bonus points are assigned for wins the first round of the Chase standings looks like:
The Sprint Cup will kick off the Chase in New Hampshire next week.
Craftsman Truck Series
Camping World 200 at Gateway International Raceway.
The truck series was in St. Louis and Ron Hornaday (#33) dominated by leading 113 of the
160 laps on the 1.25 mile track. With the win, Hornady gets his first at Gateway, his 4th of the
year and the 37th of his career. The rest of the top 5 were: Dennis Setzer (#18) 2nd, Johnny
Benson (#23) 3rd, Todd Bodine (#30) 4th and Jack Sprague (#2) 5th. Look for them again
next week at New Hampshire.
ARCA RE / MAX Series
ARCA Re/Max Chicagoland ARCA 200
Staying with the midwest theme, the ARCA series moved to the asphalt at Chicagoland
Speedway this weekend. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. (#99) earned the Pole position, but Scott
Lagasse, Jr. (#25) took the win in a two lap shoot-out holding off Stenhouse, Jr. and Scott
Speed (#2). The rest of the top five were: Justin Allgaier (#16) 4th and Jesse Smith (#30)
5th.
Mike Harmon (#24) fought engine troubles and dropped out on lap 45 to finish 33rd.
