The Nationwide Series Insider Review Weekend Update - New Hampshire - Off Week
|
The news front in the Nationwide Series was quiet with the off week. However, there were a
few noteworthy items during the week.
First, GEICO, one of the best known Nationwide Series sponsors, has decided to move its
sponsorship support up to the Sprint Cup level. They will continue to support Germain
Racing Toyotas with Max Papis in at least 18 races next season. GEICO could have stayed
in the Nationwide Series until the end of 2009, but the contract between Nationwide and
NASCAR required GEICO to leave the series before the start of the 2010 season.
Next, it looks like Team Rensi is losing the sponsorship support of Smithfield Foods,
makers of Butterball, Eckrich and Curly's BBQ, at the end of 2008.
Finally, the Nationwide Series tested the new car at Richmond on Monday and Tuesday. 5
teams and 11 drivers took to the track and comments were positive. But its way to soon to
give the car a grade as there are many changes still expected and many questions still
unanswered. One question that seems certain at this point is that the cars will NOT be pony
cars like the Mustang, Camaro or Challenger. Its a shame, the series could use a unique
identity. Look for the new car to hit the track officially at the start of the 2010 season.
The Nationwide Series is headed to Dover next weekend for the roadloans.com 200 at
Dover International Speedway on September 20th.
Trackside 1 Teams
#84 Mike Harmon Racing Chevy driven by Mike Harmon -- Harmon is still looking for
primary sponsorship and if funding cannot be secured, we might miss the Dover race. Look
for the #84 car to make its next attempt at Dover on September 20th. Partial sponsorship
has been secured, but the rear quarterpanels ($10,000) and the hood ($5,000) are still
available.
#92 Keselowski Automotive Dodge driven by Brian Keselowski -- Brian Keselowski is still
looking for primary sponsorship. Look for the #92 car to make its next attempt at Memphis in
October unless a primary sponsor can be secured before then.
Sprint Cup Series
NASCAR Sprint Cup Sylvania 300 from New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH.
Rain cancelled qualifying for the 7th time this season. This set the field based on owner's
points. This gave the top twelve chase cars a clear track and a clear advantage at the start of
the race.
However, that advantage evaporated quickly on the flat one mile track. There were 8
cautions for 37 laps. The first caution was a competition yellow to evaluate the track and rain
turned in to a 3 car wreck. This turned Busch's Chase upside down.
Greg Biffle (#16) had the best car at the end. On the restart with 11 laps to go, Biffle took over
and pulled away to an impressive victory.
It was Biffle's 13th career Cup win, 1st win this year and 1st win at New Hampshire. The win
earned Biffle $233,575 out of a $5.3 million purse. Jimmie Johnson (#48) led 98 laps and
seemed comfortable all day. Carl Edwards (#99) looked strong and led 61 laps. Dale
Earnhardt, Jr. (#88) was strong early and led 79 laps. He said, during a post race interview,
that they had a bad set of tires and could not recover after that set. Of the Chase contenders,
Matt Kenseth was hit hardest when a lap 230 wreck collected his car and threw him into the
outside wall ending his day. He finished 40th.
The rest of the top 5 were: Jimmie Johnson 2nd, Carl Edwards 3rd, Jeff Burton (#31) 4th
and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. 5th.
After an exciting race #1 the Chase standings look like this:
The Sprint Cup moves on to the 2nd stop of the Chase next week in Dover.
Craftsman Truck Series
Camping World RV Rental and Winnebago Sales 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
The truck series was the opening act in New Hampshire and for the 2nd week in a row Ron
Hornaday (#33) dominated by leading 149 of the 200 laps on the one mile track. With the
win, Hornaday gets his 3rd win at New Hampshire, his 5th of the year and the 38th of his
career. The rest of the top 5 were: Johnny Benson (#23) 2nd, Travis Kvapil (#09) 3rd, Erik
Darnell (#99) 4th and Rick Crawford (#14) 5th.
The big story of the night started with David Starr's (#11) trouble on the track. Starr took out
three different trucks in three different wrecks. All three times Starr had the bottom line,
appeared to get loose and wash up in to the truck in the high groove forcing them in to the
wall. Two of the wrecks took out teammates David Reutimann (#9) and Todd Bodine (#30).
Bodine gave Starr the chrome horn on the cool down lap and Bodine's crew tried to drag
Starr out of his car. After much pushing and shoving and a few poorly thrown punches;
NASCAR officials restored order and invited Starr and others to the NASCAR hauler for a little
talk. Expect a few fines and minor penalties for the incident.
The big story of the week was Ron Hornaday's admission that he used a topical steroid
between December 2004 and January 2006. NASCAR reviewed the situation and
determined that it was a personal issue, they received adequate answers from Hornaday
and the case is closed. The revelation adds more drama to NASCAR's loose if not
non-existent drug policy.
Look for the trucks to take the track again at Las Vegas September 20th.
ARCA RE / MAX Series
ARCA Re/Max Series Eddie Gilstrap Motors 200 by Advanced Auto Parts at Salem
Speedway in Salem, IN
Still playing in the midwest, the ARCA series moved to Salem, IN this weekend.
Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. (#99) earned his third consecutive Pole position, but Frank Kimmel was
the real story picking up the home town win. It was his 9th victory at Salem and the 74th in
his career. He is now just 5 wins shy of tying the record held by Iggy Katona's 79 career
ARCA victories. Kimmel led the final 62 laps en route to the victory.
The rest of the top five were: Matt Carter (#46) 2nd, Dexter Bean (#37) 3rd, Justin Allgaier
(#16) 4th and Sean Caisse (#01) 5th.
Mike Harmon (#24) started 23rd and was looking for a strong finish when he was caught up
in an accident on lap 86 as he tried to enter the pits. A rookie driver missed his signal to pit,
drover under Harmon and they crashed at the pit entrance. He finished 24th.
Look for the ARCA RE / MAX Series to take to the track in New Jersey on September 28th.
