The Nationwide Series Insider Review Weekend Update - Talladega - Off Week
|
Welcome to the Trackside 1 Nationwide Series Insider Review Newsletter. The Nationwide
Series was off this weekend, but there was a triple header at Talladega. ARCA raced on
Friday, The trucks raced Saturday afternoon and the Sprint Cup topped the bill on Sunday
afternoon. We'll recap the results and bring you the highlights.
Please feel free to shoot us a note and tell us what you think.
Nationwide Series
The Nationwide Series had the weekend off.
The Nationwide Series heads to Lowe's Motor Speedway this weekend for the Dollar
General 300 on Friday Night, October 10th.
There are 53 teams on the early entry list. 10 teams will be going home before the race even
starts. Rain is expected to play a part in either the qualifying process or the race itself.
If qualifying is rained out, Mike Harmon, in the #84, and Morgan Shepherd, in the #89, are
guaranteed a starting spot in the race based on the number of times they have tried to qualify
this season.
Trackside 1 Teams
#84 Mike Harmon Racing Chevy driven by Mike Harmon -- Harmon had a great run in the
Talladega ARCA race finishing 15th.
The #84 car hopes the success from ARCA rubs off on the Nationwide car this weekend.
The team has worked hard to get the car back in racing shape and looks to change their
fortune in Charlotte on October 10th. Partial sponsorship has been secured, but the rear
quarter panels ($8,000) and the hood ($5,000) are still available.
#89 Victory in Jesus Dodge driven by Morgan Shepherd -- Shepherd has put together 2
back to back top 25 runs and finished 24th in Kansas. The team accomplished this feat on
just two sets of tires!
Look for Dale Jarrett Racing Adventure and Lagina Plumbing on the car at Charlotte.
#92 Keselowski Automotive Dodge driven by Brian Keselowski -- Brian Keselowski is still
looking for primary sponsorship. However, the urge to go racing is great. The team made
the 28th fastest during the second practice. They qualified 40th fastest, but missed the race
by two spots. Look for the #92 car to make its next attempt at Memphis on October 25th.
Sprint Cup Series
NASCAR Sprint Cup Amp 500 from Talladega Super Speedway in Talladega, AL.
Travis Kvapil (#28) took the pole, Casey Mears (#5) sat on the outside of row 1.
Two drivers missed the race: Sam Hornish, Jr. (#77) Penske Racing and Patrick Carpentier
(#10) Gillette Evernham Motorsports.
The highest qualifying Chase driver was Carl Edwards (#99) in 12th. Kevin Harvick (#29)
was the worst qualifying Chase driver at 39th. None of the Chase drivers were very
impressive in qualifying, as 6 of the Chase drivers started 31st or worse.
There were 10 cautions for 41 laps and a record 64 lead changes among 28 drivers.
DEI was the strongest team with 3 drivers in the top 20 and 2 in the top 13. There were only
4 Chasers in the top 10 spots.
In a hugely controversial final lap finish, Tony Stewart (#20) was the 2nd car to take the
checkered flag, but was ruled the winner by NASCAR. Regan Smith (#01) was on Stewart's
bumper coming out of turn 4, as they reached the tri-oval, Smith faked high and drove low.
Stewart blocked the move and Smith was faced with the split second decision that defined
the race. Smith drove below the yellow line, edged ahead of Stewart and was the first car to
reach the start - finish line.
NASCAR ruled that Smith advanced his position by driving below the yellow line. the penalty
is normally a black flag with a pass through the pits. Because it was the last lap, the pass
through could not be enforced, NASCAR placed Smith in 18th position as the final car on the
lead lap. In its decisions, NASCAR also ruled that Stewart did not force Smith below the
yellow line.
With the ruling, Stewart gets his first win of the season, his first win in a Toyota and his first
ever Cup win at Talladega. Stewart takes home $270,136 of the $5.4 million purse.
What about the Big One , you ask? Its Talladega, of course there was the Big One. In fact,
we had the Big Two 1/2 and Chase drivers were in the middle of all three wrecks.
The first wreck collected Jeff Gordon (#24) and Jimmie Johnson (#48) on lap 53 when David
Reutimann (#44) blew a tire. Four cars were involved in the wreck.
The second wreck collected 9 cars on lap 68 when Brian Vickers (#83) blew a tire including:
Truex (#1), Kahne (#9), Gilliland (#38), McMurray (#26), Skinner (#84), Labonte (#45), Raines
(#70) and Almirola (#8).
The final wreck collected 12 cars on lap 174 when Carl Edwards (#99) was bump drafting
teammate Greg Biffle (#16) in turn three and turned him sideways. taken out in the final
wreck were: Biffle (#16), Kenseth (#17), Busch (#18), Blaney (#22), Kvapil (#28), Harvick
(#29), Sorensen (#41), Montoya (#42), Waltrip (#55), Nemechek (#78), Earnhardt, Jr. (#88)
and Edwards (#99).

After Chase race #4 the standings look like this:
The Sprint Cup moves on to the 5th stop of the Chase next week in Charlotte at Lowe's Motor
Speedway.
Craftsman Truck Series
The Craftsman Truck Series Mountain Dew 250 fueled by Winn-Dixie from Talladega
Superspeedway.
Erik Darnell (#99) won the pole in the truck series at Talladega. Jon Wes Townley (#09) was
the second fastest in qualifying.
Todd Bodine (#30) won the race with a flurry on the last lap. Ron Hornaday, Jr. (#33) pushed
Bodine past race leader Kyle Busch (#51) at the start - finish line.
Bodine pcked up $78,700 with the win out of the $788,000 purse.
There were 4 caution periods for 17 laps.
With Hornaday, Jr. finishing 2nd and Johnny Benson (#23) finishing 11th, Hornaday, Jr.
takes the series points lead by 39 points.
The trucks are off this weekend, but return to the track at Martinsville on October, 18th.
ARCA RE / MAX Series
The ARCA RE / MAX 250 at Talladega Superspeedway.
Justin Allgaier (#16) wins for the second week in a row. Allgaier recently signed a contract to
drive for Penske Racing in the Nationwide Series, Penske gave Allgaier's family team an
engine to run Talladega and the rest is history.
Its Allgaier's 5th wil of the season and his first at Talladega.
The rest of the top five were: Joey Lagano (#15) was 2nd, Bobby Gerhart (#5) was 3rd,
Jeremy Clements (#3) was 4th and Patrick Sheltra (#60) was 5th.
The top two in points, Speed (#2) and Stenhouse, Jr. (99) were both caught up in late race
craches that damaged both cars. The crews worked hard to get them back in the race.
Stenhouse, Jr. finished in 28th place, 19 laps down. Speed finished in 23rd place, 12 laps
down.
The Trackside 1 logo was proudly displayed on the Peterson Racing (#06) car driven by Tim
Mitchell. Mitchell finished 18th and was the last car on the lead lap.
Mike Harmon (#24) had a teriffic run, finishing 15th. The car was strong and fast all day long.
Maybe this will be the change of luck Harmon is looking for in the Nationwide Series.
With just one race remaining on the season, the points look like this:
The ARCA RE / MAX Series closes the season at Toledo this weekend Sunday, October
12th at the Hantz Group 200 by Belle Trie & Federated Car Care.
